a pair of 10th C Viking Men's hats woven in wool and hemp

Overview

  • Pair of blue wool caps in the Birka ‘B’ style
  • Based upon the descriptions and analysis of fragments found in the eastern Viking city of Birka
  • Outer cap is a blue wool single ply woven in a typical 2/1 twill weave
  • The work cap includes a lining woven from a hemp single ply yarn in a tabby (plain) weave
How they did it How I did it
Obtain a single ply wool yarn from Same
Dye the thread in the desired color The yarn was a pleasant blue that is quite plausible for a woad or indigo dye available for the target time and culture
Set the warps for a 1/2 twill Same
Prepare a warp for a warp weighted loom by creating a tablet woven band using the warp of the desired lengths to create the cloth as the weft for the tablet weaving band Woven on a horizontal floor loom in order to gain experience in producing cloth before translating it into practical experience producing yardage on the warp weighted loom
Open and close the yarns in sets passing the weft through and beating it until proper tension, making the desired weave Same, used a direct tie up to better emulate the mechanics of the warp weighted loom
