Constructing Pole Lathes for Woodworking - Master Dofinn-Hallr Morrisson. Examination of the components and Assembly of two styles of Reciprocating or Spring Pole Wood turning Lathes. All components will be available for hands on examination. Two lathes will be assembled, one based on a 16c and the other on a 14c lathe. Material choice and methods for dealing with spaces limitations as well as medieval and modern methods for providing rope/strap return will be covered. If time is permitting we will also twist up a hemp cord for use as the rope/strap. If it is raining, we will examine the parts under cover of a tent, do some assembly and look at lathe tool sharpening. Wednesday 30 July, 10 am. One and a half hours.
Brocade on a four-shaft loom - Mistress Alistrina de Mann Hands-on brocading on a four-shaft table loom. Previous weaving experience is helpful. Class is limited to 7, to ensure that attendees get quality time on the loom. Offered twice, Saturday 2 August and Tuesday August 5, both 9 am - noon.
Trichinopoly Pendants - Master Dofinn-Hallr Morrisson. A brief examination of the extant pendants from Birka and a survey of construction methods will be followed by the hands on creation of a pendant following a method developed by the instructor which simplifies and speeds construction without losing historical accuracy in the finished product. We will be working on objects with a size of under 2 cm. so if you use magnification to see fine work, please bring it to class. Bringing your own small pliers or wire cutters is not necessary but would be helpful. Materials and tools will be provided. You should already be familiar with basic trichinopoly to take this class! Materials fee $5 which includes enough fine silver to make several pendants, a copy of the handout, and some simple tools. Monday Aug. 4, 1 pm. One and a half hours.
We are regularly doing activities in camp and if the gate is open, we don’t mind folks coming in and asking questions, the following items are just those few we can pin down to a particular day in advance.
Mud Oven building Oven construction - assembly, stomping, mudding, mudding, aka “naked Laurel mud wrestling”, mudding, firing Please check at the camp to confirm the time and day but we hope it happens Tuesday 7/29 mid morning and on into the afternoon.
Green Woodworking with and without a Rest: Pole Lathe Demo and Hands On - Budgardr Woodworkers Discuss and watch medieval reciprocating lathes and woodworking tools in use. Some participants will get to prepare wood and use the lathes. Some additional times for lathe use can be schedualed. Come at any time over the demo and stay as long as you like (until the end of class when we kick you out of camp so we can make dinner) Offered twice - First Week Thurs (7/31), Second Week Tuesday (8/5) both from 10am - 2pm
Building or modifying your own tent - Many of our structures are entirely home built, others while purchased have been modified. Several have seen over a dozen Pennsics. If you are considering building your own tent, come on by and ask questions.
Green woodworking - Even when the lathes arn’t turning there is often woodworking going on in camp. Only rarely are we unwilling to talk while we work.
